Consultation Plus Screening and Written Report
Goal: Determine if your child fits the dyslexia profile based on an in-depth records review, examination of current schoolwork samples, information shared by you in a face-to-face interview, plus administer and score 8 informal screening tools to determine if your child fits the dyslexia profile and has weaknesses in the areas listed in the research-based definition of dyslexia. Results of the screening will be reviewed in a face-to-face meeting with you, and you will leave with a concise, written report that summarizes the results, my conclusion, and recommendations for remedial tutoring and classroom accommodations.
One-to-One Remedial Tutoring
Anjel Totty is a Certified Barton Reading and Spelling Tutor and proudly bases her dyslexia remediation on the Barton Reading and Spelling System.
The Barton System:

- Teaches reading skills as strongly as spelling skills
- Improves reading accuracy and fluency (speed)

Remedial tutoring is simultaneously visual, auditory and tactile, with continuous one-to-one student-teacher interaction. Each student's prescriptive teaching plan is based on careful and continuous assessment of the individual's needs. Content presented starts students with the basics and rebuilds the learning continuum step-by-step.
One hour sessions are scheduled a minimum of two days per week. Less than twice a week is not sufficient for improvement to be made. The average length of remediation varies depending on the severity of the learning difference, the age of the child, and frequency of tutoring sessions. Because there is no quick fix for dyslexia, 18-36 months of frequent and intense tutoring should be allowed to bring the student up to and beyond grade level.
The targeted skills are phonemic awareness, fluency instruction, spelling, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies. Anjel works with all age groups, beginning as early as age five.
Diagnostic Evaluations
A dyslexia evaluation looks at the student's learning patterns, strengths, weaknesses, academic history, and family history. It also includes a written diagnostic report that will include the severity of dyslexia, recommend a specific path for remediation, document a student's need for a 504 plan, and will list exactly which classroom accommodations are needed to ensure educational success.
There is no single test that can prove or disprove dyslexia. Dyslexia can vary from mild to moderate to severe to profound. That is why, as a Certified Dyslexia Testing Specialist, Anjel Totty uses a combination of 10 to 12 tests to investigate every area that could be impacted by dyslexia.
Parents, please be aware that using the right tests is only half the battle. A person who is not an expert in dyslexia may give the right tests but may not know how to correctly interpret the results.
That is why testing should be done by a professional who is an expert in dyslexia, and who has also received intense, specialized training in how to accurately give and score the tests, and to interpret the results. Anjel Totty is one of the few Certified Dyslexia Testing Specialists in the North Bay at this time.
